Cusco - Moray - Maras - Salineras - Cusco
Your day begins with a morning departure from Cusco, where you'll meet your guide and board a comfortable vehicle and set off on a scenic drive through the breathtaking Sacred Valley. As you wind through the Andean landscape, you'll be treated to stunning views of snow-capped mountains and verdant valleys, setting the tone for an unforgettable day of exploration.
Your first stop is the fascinating archaeological site of Moray, known for its impressive circular terraces. These ancient, concentric depressions were used by the Incas as an agricultural laboratory to experiment with crop cultivation at varying altitudes. As you explore the terraces, your guide will explain the significance of Moray's unique design and how it reflects the Inca's advanced understanding of agriculture and environmental adaptation.
Next, you'll head to the picturesque village of Maras, a charming town that offers a glimpse into traditional Andean life. With its well-preserved colonial architecture and cobblestone streets, Maras provides a peaceful contrast to the bustling city of Cusco. Take some time to wander through the village, admire the local craftsmanship, and soak in the serene atmosphere of this highland community.
A short drive from Maras brings you to the Salineras, or salt mines, a truly unique and captivating site. Thousands of small salt pools cascade down the hillside, creating a striking mosaic of white against the earthy tones of the surrounding landscape. These salt pans have been in use since Inca times, and the traditional method of salt extraction remains unchanged. As you explore the Salineras, your guide will share insights into the historical and cultural importance of this ancient practice, and you'll have the opportunity to observe the local workers harvesting salt in much the same way their ancestors did.
After your visit to the Salineras, you'll enjoy a leisurely lunch at a local restaurant in the Sacred Valley. Savor the flavors of traditional Peruvian cuisine as you relax in the tranquil valley setting.
Following lunch, you'll begin your journey back to Cusco, passing once more through the beautiful Andean countryside. The drive offers more opportunities to take in the stunning views and perhaps capture a few last photographs of the majestic mountains and valleys.
You'll arrive back in Cusco in the late afternoon, where you'll be dropped off at your hotel.
