We recommend booking at least 3-4 months in advance, especially during peak season (May-September). The Peruvian government issues a limited number of permits daily for the Inca Trail, and these sell out quickly. During high season, permits can sell out 6+ months ahead.
The Short Inca Trail is rated moderate. It involves approximately 3-4 hours of uphill hiking on original Inca stone steps through cloud forest, ascending about 600 meters. Anyone with average fitness who can handle moderate cardio exercise should be able to complete it. Prior hiking experience is helpful but not required.
You'll typically return to your hotel in Cusco around 9:00-10:00 PM. The day starts very early (4:00 AM pickup) and includes train travel, the trek, visiting Machu Picchu, and return transport. It's a long but incredibly rewarding day plan for about 17-18 hours total.
The maximum altitude reached is approximately 2,730m at the Sun Gate, which is lower than Cusco (3,400m). However, we still recommend spending 2-3 days acclimatizing in Cusco before the trek. Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, try coca tea, and consult your doctor about altitude medication if you're concerned.
Inca Trail permits are strictly limited and non-transferable. If permits are sold out for your preferred date, we can suggest alternative dates or recommend similar experiences like the Machu Picchu by Train tour. We'll always communicate permit availability before confirming your booking.
You'll visit Chachabamba (an Inca checkpoint site), trek through beautiful cloud forest, explore the impressive ruins of Winay Wayna ("Forever Young"), reach the iconic Sun Gate (Inti Punku) for your first view of Machu Picchu, and then descend to explore the main citadel with a guided tour.
The minimum age is 12 years old. Children must be in good physical condition and accompanied by a parent or guardian. The trek involves sustained uphill walking and uneven terrain, so consider your child's hiking experience and fitness level before booking.

Yes, Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain can be added for $60 extra per person, subject to availability. However, given the timing of the Short Inca Trail (arriving at Machu Picchu in the afternoon), these mountain hikes may not be available. Please inquire at the time of booking for options.
