Embark on an extraordinary full-day adventure to Peru's most iconic natural wonder. Vinicunca, the legendary Rainbow Mountain, stands at 5,200 meters as a breathtaking testament to millions of years of geological artistry. The vivid natural colors of its slopes created by mineral sedimentation form stripes of red, yellow, green, and turquoise that seem almost surreal against the Andean sky. This region is home to the Apu Ausangate, one of the most sacred peaks in Andean cosmovision, symbol of protection and fertility for local communities. After conquering the summit, explore the stunning Red Valley, whose ochre and crimson landscapes create an extraordinary contrast against the snow-capped peaks. This challenging yet rewarding journey takes you through pristine high-Andean terrain, offering encounters with herds of alpacas and llamas, and panoramic views of the majestic Vilcanota mountain range. Perfect for adventurous souls seeking to witness one of nature's most spectacular masterpieces.
Journey from Cusco (3,400m) through Pitumarca (3,700m) for breakfast, then ascend to Pampachiri (4,600m) where the trek begins, hiking up to Rainbow Mountain (5,200m) with optional Red Valley visit before returning via the same route.

Key points from our booking policies
This is a summary of our key terms. For complete details and full legal terms, please review our complete Terms and Conditions document.
The hike is classified as challenging, primarily due to the extreme altitude of 5,200m (17,060 ft). The trail is approximately 6km round trip with 600m elevation gain. The main challenge is the thin air at this altitude. If you've acclimatized properly in Cusco for 2-3 days, people with good fitness can complete it. Horse rental is available if needed.
Yes, it really is! The stunning rainbow stripes are natural and formed by mineral deposits over millions of years. Colors include red (iron), yellow (sulfur), green (chlorite), and more. The colors are most vibrant on sunny mornings when snow doesn't cover the mountain. Overcast or snowy days may show less contrast, but it's still impressive!
The Red Valley (Valle Rojo) is an alternative viewpoint near Rainbow Mountain, featuring stunning ochre and crimson-colored mountains. It requires an additional 20-30 minute walk from the Rainbow Mountain viewpoint. Many visitors find it equally stunning and less crowded. It's included in our tour and optional to visit!
Yes! Horses are available for rent at Pampachiri for approximately $20-30 one way or $40-50 round trip. You can ride about 80-90% of the way the final steep section must be done on foot. This is a great option if you're struggling with altitude or fitness.
Snow can cover Rainbow Mountain, especially during the wet season (November-March). When this happens, the colors may be partially or fully hidden. The dry season (April-October) offers the best chance of seeing the full color spectrum. However, even with some snow, the scenery is spectacular and the Ausangate views are incredible!
The early start ensures we arrive at the trailhead before the crowds and during the best weather. Mornings typically have clearer skies, better lighting for photos, and calmer winds. The drive from Cusco takes about 2.5 hours, so starting early means you're hiking when conditions are optimal and the colors are most vibrant.
Our guides carry emergency oxygen and first aid kits. At 5,200m, symptoms like shortness of breath, headache, or nausea are common. The best prevention is acclimatizing in Cusco for 2-3 days, staying hydrated, and going slowly. Coca tea and candy help. If symptoms are severe, you can descend or rent a horse your safety is our priority.
Yes! Both buffet breakfast (at Pitumarca) and buffet lunch (after the hike) are included. Vegetarian options are available upon request please let us know when booking. We recommend bringing energy snacks and plenty of water for the hike itself.
Due to the extreme altitude (5,200m), we recommend this hike for children 12 years and older who are in excellent health and have already adjusted to Cusco's altitude. Younger children may struggle significantly with the altitude and distance. Horses can help, but please contact us to discuss your specific situation.
