This 2-day tour combines the unique Maras Salt Mines and Moray agricultural terraces with Machu Picchu. You'll experience Chinchero's traditional market, the impressive circular terraces of Moray, and the stunning white salt pools of Maras all before reaching the Lost City.
The tour begins with hotel pickup in Cusco between 6:00 AM and 6:30 AM on Day 1. Early departure allows us to visit Chinchero, Moray, and Maras before lunch, then continue to Ollantaytambo for the train to Aguas Calientes.
The tour includes one night in a 3-star hotel in Aguas Calientes with breakfast. Hotels are clean, comfortable, and centrally located. Upgrades to higher category hotels are available upon request at additional cost.
Day 1 includes buffet lunch in Urubamba and dinner in Aguas Calientes. Day 2 includes breakfast at your hotel. Lunch on Day 2 is not included but you'll have free time in Aguas Calientes to enjoy lunch at your leisure before the return train.
The Maras Salt Mines visit is easy to moderate. You'll walk on paths between the salt pools with some uneven terrain. The views are spectacular and the walk is leisurely. Good walking shoes are recommended. The site is at 3,380m altitude.
Chinchero is the highest point at 3,762m. We recommend arriving in Cusco 1-2 days before to acclimatize. The overnight in Aguas Calientes (2,040m) helps with acclimatization before visiting Machu Picchu (2,430m). Stay hydrated and try coca tea.
Yes! Unlike one-day tours, this 2-day itinerary allows time to climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain. However, these require separate permits that must be booked in advance. Let us know when booking and we can arrange the additional tickets.
The tour includes Expedition class round-trip train tickets (Ollantaytambo - Aguas Calientes - Ollantaytambo). Upgrades to Vistadome class with panoramic windows are available at additional cost. The scenic 1.5-hour journey follows the Urubamba River through the cloud forest.
Pack a small overnight bag with change of clothes, toiletries, and camera charger. Larger luggage can be left at your Cusco hotel. Don't forget your passport (original required for train and Machu Picchu entry), rain jacket, sunscreen, and comfortable walking shoes.
On Day 2, you'll return to Cusco in the late afternoon/early evening (around 6:00-7:00 PM), depending on train schedules and traffic. Private transportation from Ollantaytambo station to your hotel in Cusco is included.
We recommend booking 2-3 months in advance during peak season (May-October). Train tickets and Machu Picchu entry permits have daily limits and sell out quickly. For Huayna Picchu permits, book 3-4 months ahead.
